The Wittenberg Trail

Hiya-- can anyone recommend a good commentary on St. Paul's epistle to the Philippians, or advise on ones to avoid (bearing in mind that I know that much of mainline Protestantism and neo-evangelical commentaries are problematic)? Thanks for everyone's suggestions--

Ken: The list of ones to avoid is much longer than the list to recommend. But even when we do have a good commentary--how do we know when it is right? How do we test each point to make sure?

Tools you need before you utilize any commentary include:
A complete concordance (preferably a computer concordance so that you can search on phrases as well as words). I recommend Bibleworks for its ability to search Greek, Hebrew and its many lexicons that come with it as well as most English translations.

Now you can get all this stuff in book form, and I have all the books but research is quicker and easier with Bibleworks.

Doing a word study on each word in a verse shows how Paul uses that word in other places or how he deals with the same issue in other letters. This is how you will know whether the commentary is right or wrong--by comparing it to Paul's usage and meaning throughout Philippians and his other letters. Otherwise, you never know if the commentary is right or wrong, even if it is a good commentary like R. C. H. Lenski's commentaries on the New Testament.
Ken: Are you wanting commentaries in order to help in writing a sermon on Philippians?
No, more in the general sense of rounding out my library and as a tool for Bible studies. Besides, I coudn't get anything in time for this Sunday, anyway ;)
