I would encourage everyone to also look into Gerhard's Postilla. Very interesting/enlightening hermeneutics. Take a look at

www.scholia.net/repristination.html

I would also like to commend CPH for taking on the daunting task of the Loci. This is a step in the right direction for the next generation of pastor's education. It would be a shame for the orthodox theologians to fall of our radar.

I purchased the first volume on Theology and Scripture when it first came out and spent my entire vacation devouring it. Not long ago, I received the latest volume on God and the Trinity and am working my way through it without the luxury of vacation time. This work is magnificent. Weighty, thorough, and yet devotionally edifying at the same time.

I'm in! I was reviewing them today. I was reading Pr. McCain's's blog and saw his recommendation. I'm going to purchase the first volume today from CPH, which I highly recommend all to do. As Pr. McCain mentioned on his blog, Concordia Publishing House is a wonderful ministry and we need to support it by buying our "spiritual food" from this confessional cafe!

I spent Lent last year wading through Gerhard's "Sacred Meditations". interesting stuff!

I read Gerhard's "An Explanation of the History of the Suffering and Death of Our Lord Jesus Christ" every Lent. I get some new insight from it every year.
Oh, and I loved the first volume on Theology and Scripture! Good job CPH!

I hope you will find it a bit funny that I mistakenly thought this was a group for Paul Gerhardt, the beloved German Lutheran hymn writer! Maybe I will start that group myself.

I recently found this resource on Gerhard. It is an essay by Gaylin R. Schmeling, Gerhard, Theologian and Pastor.

Thank you, Theresa for the nice hint concerning Schmeling's paper on Gerhard. I'm collecting anything I can get by him or on him. A retired pastor once gave me the latin version of his Loci. But I also enjoy reading his devotional or pastoral works, especially his meditations. There is a very early and short version of his sacred meditations which - to my knowledge - is available in Latin only. But there will be a German translation very shortly. In some respects this version is even more moving than the late mature version, since Gerhard wrote it when he was 21 years old and struggling with death.

"Prayer is a chambermaid of God who may approach God without knocking. The moment she approaches, God the Lord asks: "What do you need? Come on in and don't be afraid." J.G. (Rogate sermon, Postilla)
