Tell us about yourself ( e.g. hobbies, education, projects you are working on, etc.). What brings you to the Wittenberg Trail?
Having fervently struggled with doctrinal issues, being brought along by God's gracious Holy Spirit from Arminian Pentacostalism to strident calvinism, there has been no brighter light in my survey of theology than Martin Luther. I was "renewed in the Holy Spirit" (Titus 3:5b) at 16 and am thankful for where the Lord is leading me and for the wonderful innovation in fellowship this website provides.

True Holiness

"Jesus said to him, 'If you wish to be perfect, go, sell your possessions, and give money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow Me." - Matthew 19:21.

There exists a law of perfection in the Gospel for they that would justify themselves under the "Gospel". The rich young man extended the works righteousness of the Pharisaical system to the ministry of Christ. Just as the papists, he sought perfection in piety, that he could save himself by adhering to yet…

The Emergence of Love

"I will sanctify My great Name, which has been profaned among the nations, and which you profaned among them; and the nations shall know that I am the Lord, says the Lord God, when through you I display My holiness before their eyes. I will take you from the nations, and gather you from all the countries, and bring you into your own land. I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from your idols I will cleanse you. A new heart I will give…

Unfailing Waters

"For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all, training us to renounce impiety and worldly passions, and in the present age to live lives that are self-controlled, upright and godly, while we wait for the blessed hope and the manifestation of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. He it is Who gave Himself for us that He might redeem us from all iniquity and purify for Himself a people of His own who are zealous for good works." Titus 2:11-14.

The Great Lesson of this life.

"His divine power has given us everything needed for life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness." I Peter 1:3.

THESIS: We mix Law and Gospel when we do not have a well developed doctrine of sanctification because we end up regarding cross bearing as a means of Grace rather than an effecting of the righteousness of the law.

One of the primary texts that would seem to refute the above thesis would be I Peter 1:5-7,

"For…

Beyond Law and Gospel, the Piety of Hope.

"See how great He is!" (Hebrews 7:4a)

In the Person of Christ we discover that point at which Law and Gospel are transcended. In Him the perfection of the Law is fulfilled, but at His earthly sojourn where was the Gospel for Him? It lay in what He unquestioningly would do, the assurance of which provided by the prescience of the Divine Mind, also rested in a Positional Dynamism as the "Beloved Son" and, the One with Whom the Father was well pleased. It was by virtue of His…

Welcome Chris! I wish my son-in-law could talk to you! His background is much the same as yours, it sounds like. He just hasn't yet come to your conclusion yet. Lutheran worship just doesn't excite him enough.

Chris, I can only suggest that you talk with your pastor about your concern with "Registration for Communion". He will probably put your mind at rest on the subject. If not, that will tell you something, too.
