Reflections of a Landmark Convention

The theme of the 64th Triennial Convention of the LCMS, "One People-Forgiven”, certainly was the theme that was followed throughout the week. There seemed to be a bit of uneasiness in the air the first couple of days. I am not real sure but it seemed that much of the uneasiness may have been caused by the Committee 8 proposals on restructuring and Governance. This theme was the focal point of the first couple of days in the convention and…

Hi Jerry,

Hope the golfing goes well. Your weather sounds wonderful! It is going to be in the high 80's here and very humid. Sweat city!

I had an opportunity to have a personal conversation with the then President of the AALC while in Houston last summer. There are some real problems in the AALC as there are a number of congregations very much into the Charismatic Movement and open communion....come to think of it, maybe they are a good "fit" for the LCMS...sigh! Talk with you later. Dick Bolland

Hi Jerry,

From our Lutheran Confessions:

Formula of Concord, Art. II, “Free Will”,
25-26

“In the third place, Holy Scriptures ascribe conversion, faith in Christ, regeneration, renewal, and everything that belongs to its real beginning and completion in no way to the human powers of the natural free will, be it entirely or one-half or the least and tiniest part, but altogether and alone to the divine operation and the Holy Spirit as the Apology declares. To some extent reason and free will are able to lead an outwardly virtuous life. But to be born anew, to receive inwardly a new heart, mind, and spirit, is solely the work of the Holy Spirit. He opens the intellect and the heart to give heed to understand the Scriptures and to heed the Word.”

There is no "regenerated Old Adam", our sinful nature is not improved nor removed. What is new about the new man? The presence of the Holy Spirit only. As St. Paul writes in Philippians 2:13, "...for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose." (NIV)

An excellent book on this subject is Rev. Harold Senkbeil's "Sanctification: Christ in Action", Northwestern Publishing House, Milwaukee, WI, 1989, now in its sixth printing.

Yes, that is the WELS publishing house, but Senkbeil is a professor at our Ft. Wayne Seminary.

When will the beer be ready? I'll be up to test it out! Dick Bolland

That is precisely the facts of the matter. In all things, it is a matter of God's grace and His action in us. He gets all the credit!

Actually, Linda and I have frequently wanted to return to Montana at least for a visit, but the reorientation of our family due to our daughters marriage and settling in Lubbock, TX, have pretty much messed up such plans. We are planning on a trip to NYC this fall, however, where we shall hop a cruise ship and head up the east coast in the height of fall color season and then up to Nova Scotia, down the St. Laurence Seaway to Quebec. Perhaps when that's paid off a trip to prison in Montana may have some allure. :-)

Marie made it to 102! God be praised! She was always gracious to us when we were in St. Ignatius. It was an honor to have known her and I look forward to seeing her again before Christ's throne on the Last Day.

Ericka was married last July just after the Synodical convention. Talk about a juxtiposition of frustration and joy! Her new married name is Walmsley and we are very proud of her. She's become a gracious and godly young woman of 35! She also has a spot on WT, but her picture is not exactly the best. Check out her wedding pic on my WT homepage.

Hi Jerry,

Thanks be to God, Kansas City has been spaired the flooding you see on your TV. Everything is 3-4 hours north or east of us. LaVonne Omsted let us know about both Hazel Detert and Mr. Patterson up in Polson. They are now enjoying the face of Christ in heaven!
