Thanks for the welcome. I look forward to seeing what this site has to offer. Pastor Leary, thanks for inviting me. And thanks for clearing up the "identity issue."

ILCW? We had that Gospel reading *last* Sunday.

Hmmm, well, some see the temptations as a reflection of the temptation in Eden--1) the offer or food, 2) the challenge to God's Word/Promises, and 3) offering something the person already has.

To Eve, Satan made the fruit look desirable. Certainly to Jesus, without food for 40 days, a loaf of bread might sound good.

To Eve Satan challenged whether she would really die if she ate. To Jesus he challenged whether God would save him if he jumped.

He offered Eve the chance to be like God, which she already was in her sinless state. To Jesus he offered the world--even though Jesus as King of the Universe already owned it all.

Not sure if this helps or is what you are looking for.

Phil, I was wrong for being heartless and not phrasing your status as grandpa well, or phrasing it in a terrible manner. Like Job we do have the assurance of resurrection and like Job at the end of the day all children, with us or with our Heavenly Father, are to be counted. And holding those precious lambs is indeed a joy--both your own, nieces/nephews, and I'm sure grandchildren.

Hello John! I just signed up on this website recently, and today I stumbled across your name! You may not remember me, (and I had a different last name then too) but I was a member of East Paint Creek - you were there briefly in the 90's, I believe. Sounds like you are a successful writer- I am glad to hear that.

Hehehe- I consider 'published' successful! My last name was Weber back then- 2 elementary-aged kids, a husband who was more of a kid than an adult.... (he's long gone) Did we have a choir when you were there- if so, I was in that.

We have had a LOT going on with our congregation. Actually, East and West Paint Creek no longer exist as congregations- we moved in to Waukon, bought an auto parts store and remodled the downstairs into a church (small but adequate for now), changed the name to King of Grace, lost some members in the move (seeing as it was VERY controversial), got new members since we came into town.... whew! And that's just the highlights!

Yes, we've had a very interesting past few years. Our congregation consists mostly of the previous West members, and us, my mom (Fran Busness)- (dad passed away in 98) - and Marlys Leiran (her husband, Willard passed away in 2001) attends but hasn't joined. It turned into an 'East vs West' thing. Some of the East members ended up very bitter about the whole thing- nobody wanted to leave the precious building behind. Granted- you know we have a couple of beautiful churches, but it was come into town and try to grow the congregation or die. And with the 'Old East and Old West" parishes in addition to ours- the name change was inevitable to end the confusion. Old East and Old West are ELCA, but they are 'Word Alone' - so some of the former East members joined there. Sigh- they just don't get it.

VERY interesting that you have written a Bible study on "What's Going on Among the Lutherans"- Pastor Kincaid Smith has been our Pastor for the last 2 years!! We also just got a vicar but Pastor Smith still comes down once a month.

I believe we did come to Bible Study when you were here. Robin and Eric moved to St. Peter MN and recently divorced. They have a boy and a girl. Sounds like things have been pretty tough- but that's how divorces go.

Oh, and I am the organist for the church now! Not real accomplished, but I can get thru a hymn.
