Christopher Columbus and the Flat-Earth Myth

Christopher Columbus and the Flat-Earth Myth

By Gary DeMar

Each October, Christopher Columbus is hammered for his voyages of exploitation of native peoples, and Christians are ridiculed for once opposing the forward-thinking Columbus and his rejection of the flat earth mythology held by the medieval church. Is any of it true? I'll leave the question of exploitation to be answered by others, but the flat earth issue is easily answered. In the eleven-volume Our Wonder World, first… Continue

Katherine,
Read your comment on the Cry in the Wilderness discussion and have to wonder if you are a homeschooler? We are and are very classical so I notice when others plug for it! Welcome to WT!

Absolutely!

It seems that different ways of looking at God's will tend to focus either on his sovereignty as the greatest good, or on Christ crucified. The thing is, it's not comforting (or really biblical) to think of God as a capricious deity who simply does things because he can and he wants to, even if evil seems to be involved and our own good is not really high up on his radar screen. Only when sin and death are noted as the ugly things that they are, do we find the answer for those things in the cross. Though we can't understand all the twists and turns of this messed-up world, Christ has graciously come to die and to conquered sin, death and hell, and as we live under the cross we also can anticipate the resurrection and the end of pain and death forever.

Please forgive me for reading your message to kelly about the sudden death of your wonderful father. God comforted me with these Bible passages and I hope that He will confort you and your family also :
Matthew 11:28
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Mark 13:27
And then he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.

Kathrine,

What part of Arkansas are you from? My wife, son and moved about a year ago, from Conway, AR, to Ft. Wayne, IN - I am a 1st year seminarian

My wife and I are originally from Sugarland, TX (20 miles southwest of Houston). Its good to see that there are some confessional Lutherans in AR. I have noticed that seminarians from Ft.Wayne rarely get calls to AR congregations.

Well thanks be to God that you guys are in AR. The state needs more Lutherans like you all. No, I was not trying to start a rivalry between the two seminaries...I totally support both of them, and think they are both confessional.

Hi Katherine,

I'm a newbe to this and just feeling my way around. It is good to hear from you and have you on my friends list. Hope you, Jon, and the fam are doing well.

Have you and Jon registered for our class in August yet. I should have the Syllabus ready soon. Been sooo busy lately and nursing a terrible cold.

BTW, thanks so much for all you are doing for the CEQ. I believe our last issue has really been a good one.

Greet Jon for me.

Sorry to hear about your cold. It seems so many have been nursing them these days. Glad to hear you guys are all registered for August. I am really looking forward to it.

The CEQ Digest issue should be going out by Dr. Bill Cochran's synodical school/educators mailing in August. Thanks for all your work on it.
