Hi Keith, nice to say hello to a fellow WT newcomer!

I couldn't help but notice your profile said that you're a Lutheran convert. If you don't mind me asking, what church (if any) did you come from? Just curious, I find these sorts of things interesting. I'm thankful that Christ has called you to Himself! Good to see you on the WT!

God bless!

Hi Keith,

Wow, that's a really great story.  You are a true "Wittenberg Trail-er"!  What a story, shows the power of the Holy Spirit to draw you to the truth of His Word even in the midst of a very Roman Catholic upbringing.  The Jesuits tend to be some of the more strongly submitted to the pope, if I'm not mistaken?

That's great that you love reading too.  I think reading the Lutheran Confessions and other such things is very important, yet many people often don't see the importance.  Congratulations on being an avid reader!  I myself did not really realize the importance of really knowing what I believed about Scripture until I started getting into deeper conversations with especially my RC friends, and even some "Reformed."  Then it was like, "Wow, it's really nice to be able to say 'here's what I believe, and here's why because Scripture says this.'"  Now I'm kind of addicted to the Book of Concord!  :)  Your congregation is blessed to have a steadfast elder like yourself.

You're so right about doctrine/application. It's a really important thing, I believe especially in today's world. It's important to be able to apply doctrine, especially with all this post-modern/subjective morality floating around. But you have to know what what you believe, and why you believe it first.
And you're right, after talking with some of my Catholic friends, I don't see how you were able to see clearly what Luther taught about good works. I continue to be impressed by your dedication to reading! I think many people think that Luther preached against good works, etc. But you got it, he preached that good works always follow true faith, and are in that way crucial. He just taught that only the blood of Christ justifies, and it is received only by faith, and not the works that follow. It's like the tree/fruit relationship that Christ uses in Matthew.
Have you ever read "The Freedom of a Christian"?

Ah, I have procured a digital copy of Luther's Commentary on Galatians from the CTSFW website, and I am currently trying to work my way through it. What a work of art, yes? I have yet to get a copy of the Romans commentary though, that's probably next on my list! I'm so thankful that the Spirit has worked in you through His Word and great men of faith such as Luther. We are so blessed to have those who have gone before us to provide us with such an incredibly solid, Scriptural foundation. Sometimes I wonder what things would be like if not for the absolutely masterful work of especially Melanchthon and also Chemnitz. Some of that stuff is truly incredible to read.

Were there any particular Roman doctrines that really struck you as conflicting with Scripture, or really influenced your thinking or something? Just curious, I hope you don't mind me asking.

Thank you for your encouragement as well. May God continue to richly bless you in your study of the truths of His Word. (And I'll tell you when I finish reading the Galatians commentary! :)

Wow...no one has asked me to be their friend here at WT for a long time. What a wonderful surprise to find your invitation in my email. I'm a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church LCMS only I'm here in Topeka Kansas. What did you talk about at church today ? Are you at Face Book also ? I've got RC's in my family too, infact my grandson invited me to his Grandparents Day at his Catholic School. So were your parents and grandparents on the Roman Catholic branch of Christianity ? So what happened...did you get married to a Lutheran ?

I see you have an appreciation for the fleur de lis symbol http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fleur-de-lis so I've done a little reading about it. Do you have family ties in France ? My Husband Don & I went to Paris a long time ago...wow what a great memory. Why do you like the fleur de lis ?
