"Melissa, you are most welcome! I pray you are well in both body and soul. In 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy and Titus have numerous references to "sound doctrine" or "sound teaching" or "sound words' and the word…"

First Article Gifts and Fitness

Greetings in Christ's Mercy, All.I'm looking for some resources on "Mind, Body & Spiritual" Fitness (If there is such a thing) with some sort of Lutheran deconstruction and rationale. I'm looking toward First Article gifts and the providential nature of Our Father in this temporal life. Besides the catechism, is there a contemporary resource that develops that further... in line with the topic fitness?  I mean, we can talk about the vocation of an athlete, but I don't think I want to say…See More

What Does It Take?

Throughout my various recruiting and counseling communications with many women; the young and old alike continuously ask me, ‘Deaconess DeGroot, What does it take to be a good Deaconess?” This is a very good question, and yet sometimes the hardest to answer. In my finite wisdom, I often times construct practical, biblical guides for these women to contemplate. For good reasons, the following are examples of open-ended questions that I put back into a prospective student’s court to… Continue

Holy-day Contrition

How many of you still have Christmas cards sitting on your desks, tables, dressers-what-have-you, waiting to be mailed out? Or, any of you just remembered somebody whom you forgot to give a present, card or well wish? Finally, is anyone just plain overwhelmed with all of the pressures, self inflicted or otherwise, that comes with this festive time of year? As the infamous Ben Stein would say..."Anyone?... Anyone???" Okay, now that I’ve confessed my… Continue

Sisterhood of the Traveling Navy Garb

Some wonder, ‘Where do our Deaconess students come from, and how do they serve in various areas of the world?’ And the simple answer to the first question is ‘everywhere!’ From Texas to North Dakota, California to Rhode Island, and many states and regions in between, there is no area scarce of women seeking to serve. Further, international deaconess students from Europe, Asia and Africa, [just to name a few continents] have also matriculated to… Continue

Why Phoebe? Why Deaconesses?

I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a servant of the church at Cenchreae, that you may welcome her in the Lord in a way worthy of the saints, and help her in whatever she may need from you, for she has been a patron of many and of myself as well” (Romans 16:1–2).

Referenced as a female servant (diakonos) by the Apostle Paul, Phoebe has become an icon for the… Continue

The Deaconess Difference

The Gospel Text for the Week: Matthew 9:37, "The Harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few."

There have been some misnomers out there that describe deaconesses as “nuns” or “mini-pastors.” This blog post hopes to develop a primer discussion of what a deaconess is and what she is not, and leave the reader to understand the important distinctions of both. In relation to what deaconesses are alongside any other churchly offices, this will… Continue

Thank you, Melissa. We are planning on using that Te Deum at my daughter's wedding in August. I do strive to be a faithful contemporary hymn writer so that my texts point to Christ and His redemptive work on the world's behalf. Continued joy and peace in Christ!

I did my stint at camp as well. Fun times, bad theology:). My "story" is fairly long. Had Lutheran friends in high school... went to college... became a Lutheran... thought this "DCE" thing sounded interesting... went to a certain corn-fed Concordia... fun times, bad theology... although there was a copy of Walthers Law/Gospel placed into my hands... went off to be the "greatest DCE known to synod"... crashed and burned... came home... had a patient saint for a Pastor.
Of course many interesting anecdotes in between.
It has become my personal opinion that MUCH of the distracting silliness in the Synod today can, most likely, be traced back to a DCE somewhere:). As far as sanctification... I think if some could get it out of their minds and theology that WE somehow drive that cart...
well, that may just close a few Christian Book stores:). So you are up at Ft. Wayne? There must be some good books up there:).
