"Looking for a Liturgical Church near you?" (moderately long)

So it says with the link on the right hand margin of the page.  To make a long story short, I was received into the LCMS from a Reformed denomination after several years of study attempting to obtain a reasonably good understanding of Lutheran theology and practice.  My teachers included some who have posted on this site and others who are well known in the orthodox Lutheran community.  Others are long since deceased including the first Martin, the second Martin and a guy named Sasse.  I think…See More

Rick,

If you don't mind me asking, you sound a lot like me in your journey and in KY. What part, we live in KY too.

Yours,

Larry

Morning Rick,

GREAT! Especially since you are from this area. We use to live in Louisville and I'm from Meade Co., just north of Ft. Knox. We live in C. KY now due to work and attempting to cut down on mileage. We went to a couple of churches in that area. I'll write you later tonight after I get home and get the kids to sleep, I think we will have some great conversations. I'll detail as we talk but I basically went from SB to agnostic to SB again to SB cavlinist then to Reformed to a closet Lutheran now in a PCA church (more on that later).

This is great, I've been waiting for someone in the area to talk to of similar struggle.

Man this is great, this made my day.

I've got to go for now but will be back later. I wanted to shoot you back a quick response.

Yours,

Larry

Rick,

Presently we attend a Reformed PCA church. It basically happened that way because I'd not come full swing to Luther yet, though on baptism I was on the supper and absolution (it had not hit me yet). We are looking for good LCMS church within reason while we still attend, that's tough. The hardest part will be leaving a couple that we find dear to us. Just yesterday driving home from church I told my wife, "I don't know if we should stay much longer. As good as some PCA/reformed can be (meaning the Gospel is there some), it's still hard to listen to that pietism and not have the sacraments as you believe them to be.

If you all have found a good one let me know.

Talk to you later,

Larry

Rick,

I had an idea, think about it. I noticed that you too like me endear greatly to Dr. Forde's book on TOC. I'm like you I read and reread that book constantly and find nuggets of gold that I missed before hand every time! You sound like you've had that experience too.

I thought about this, maybe you and I could start a topic post on here discussing chapter by chapter some of the things that really come out for us in it.

Now having kids and a family I understand time and such, so I was thinking about a very casual approach to it. There may be days and weeks inbetween. But it might be helpful for some because coming from that outside in to Luther I think some of us folks experience Gospel awakenings others may miss (just my theory).

Anyway, just something to think about.

Yours truly,

Larry

Hi Larry.

Sure, it would be great to discuss that book on an ongoing basis. As I mentioned that was the first book suggested to me by my Lutheran "mentor" who was actually a seminary student of Forde many years ago. Like you I get it out every now and then and re-read sections. Honestly the first time I read it I didn't really "get it" but after reading other books and essays, what I had read in TOC starting seeping into my hard head. I think most Reformed people would agree with what Forde wrote but only with regard to initial justification. For them sanctification comes through rigid self-discipline and the law. Obviously Forde is talking about both justification and sanctification which I recall he defined as "the daily living out of your justification" in another book I think.

blessings,
Rick
