Difficult Questions?

If you are a political junky like me you know that the phrase, "That's a difficult question," is often used by politicians when they are asked questions on a hot button issue. The purpose of the phrase is multifaceted. This statement makes the person look to be thoughtful, intelligent, and informed. The statement gives the person a moment to collect thoughts without looking like he is unsure how to answer. The statement may signal that the person answering is aware that the hearers may not like… Continue

My favorite Psalm

Last Sunday I was in a small groups meeting at church. We were asked to talk about a meaningful experience or ministry we had been involved in or would like to be involved in. I'm a new member of my church and relatively new to church in general. Going around the room everyone had stories about projects and groups they had been part of and when it came to me I didn't really have any ministry stories. But I did have something meaningful;

One Sunday about a month ago our AIM was… Continue

"The Father's Day" (Galatians 3:23 – 4:7)

“The Father’s Day” (Galatians 3:23 – 4:7)

Today is Fathers’ Day, a day when we honor our fathers for the blessing that they are to us. This is good and right that we do this--especially you fourteen-year-old girls out there in the congregation! Be sure to honor your father today!

Now for many of us, our fathers are long gone. But that does not mean we don’t have a Father to honor today. In fact, I want to suggest to you that this is “The Father’s Day,” a great… Continue

Is There a Place for Lutherans at THEOLOGICA (theologica.ning.com)?

I have recently taken a look at THEOLOGICA, which is a community much broader than Wittenberg Trail, and seems heavy on Calvinism.

I have sought to start a Lutheran group there, but cannot unless they think there is enough interest in such a group. The following hyperlink goes to my plea for such a group: http://theologica.ning.com/forum/topics/a-possible-new-group-here-at

Do you…

Avicennian logic?

I only just discovered this. It is a Wikipedia 'Request for Comment' or RfC, which is rather like a court where Wikipedia editors pile on to each other, attack and eat their own. This one is quite extraordinary…

"Lord, 'Tis Not that I did Choose Thee"

by Josiah Conder, 1789-1855

1. Lord, 'tis not that I did choose Thee;

That, I know, could never be;

For this heart would still refuse Thee

Had Thy grace not chosen me.

Thou hast from the sin that stained me

Washed and cleansed and set me free

And unto this…

From Esther to evolution

From Esther to evolution

Who knows whether we have not come to this place in order to risk our reputations

| Marvin Olasky

One of the Bible's great statements about courage comes in chapter 5 of Esther. The Jewish queen of Persia has told Uncle Mordecai that she can't go before the king: If she does, she'll probably die.

Mordecai responds with…

"Forgiven Much, Love Much" (Luke 7:36-50)

“Forgiven Much, Love Much” (Luke 7:36-50)

Why is it that there seems to be so little love for God these days? I mean, why aren’t these pews packed full of worshipers? Where are all the people who ought to be here but are not here? So little love for God!

Well, I can tell you the answer very simply: Lots of people don’t think they need what God is giving here, which is the forgiveness of sins. You see, if you don’t think you have many sins, if you don’t think you… Continue

A TALE OF TWO CHURCHES

A TALE OF TWO (LUTHERAN) CHURCHES.

CHAPTER I.

"IT was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief,..." ¹ It was the epoch of apostasy. It was the July of Light, it was the August of Darkness, "it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us,...in short, the period was so…
